We only accept applications for our residency program through ERAS and we participate fully with the NRMP. We have no minimum requirement for USMLE or COMLEX scores, and conduct a holistic review of each applicant’s application package before making interview invitations. We appreciate diversity of life experiences, backgrounds, and training in our selection process. Please read more about our recruitment guiding principles in our Commitment to Ethical Equitable and Transparent Recruitment Practices.
We prefer to have four letters of recommendation in support of each applicant to assist in our holistic review process, however will accept three if a student encounters challenges. If possible, we encourage students to obtain at least one letter from an individual in the department of pediatrics (e.g. chair, clerkship director, faculty attending, mentor, etc.) and one from an individual in the department of internal medicine (e.g. chair, clerkship director, faculty attending, mentor, etc.). The other two letters can be assigned at the applicant's discretion; however, we strongly encourage letters from individuals who have worked with you in a clinical, mentoring, leadership, or scholarly capacity to facilitate commentary on your clinical acumen, work ethic, dedication, and interpersonal communication skills. We recognize that all students may not be able to get a letter from a supervisor in the department of pediatrics and internal medicine and recommend using the guidelines in the previous sentence if they experience difficulty.
To allow ample time for our holistic review of applications, we plan on sending out our interview invitations on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 10th, 2023 in accordance with the recommendations made by the Med-Peds Program Director Association (MPPDA). The number of interview invitations we send out will match the number of interview slots we have available and will be sent out in unison. We will continue to send out invitations for interviews thereafter on a rolling basis as cancellations occur.
We have no minimum requirement for USMLE/COMLEX scores and look at an applicant's entire application package before making our interview invitations. For the 2023-2024 application cycle we would request to have the Step II CK/COMLEX Level II-CE scores by the end of September 2023.
We will be conducting virtual interviews for the 2023-2024 application season in accordance with the recommendations from the national organizations and our institution's Office of Graduate Medical Education. We anticipate that we will be interviewing in from mid October to late December 2022.
We utilize the thalamus comprehensive scheduling platform to schedule our interviews. This platform provides applicants with easy, secure, and immediate interview scheduling capabilities. In order to ensure our invited applicants have a fair opportunity to schedule an interview, we will only release invitations to interview based upon the exact number of interview slots we have available.
While all of our interview experiences will be virtual this year, we hope to also host optional visits to our institutions after interviews after our interviews are complete. If we host these visits, the safety of our applicants, residents, faculty, and patients will be made a top priority. We recognize travel to our institution may be a financial barrier for many applicants, and therefore will not be requiring a visit and will not allow a visit to impact one’s standing with our program.
Our decision process is made by a diverse committee that completes a holistic review of each applicant and the qualities they will bring to our program. This committee consists of many of the people you will meet on your interview day, all of whom participate in implicit bias training on an annual basis. We also strive to adhere to all of the NRMP Match Policies in our selection process. We attempt to limit our post-interview communication with applicants to align with recommendations from AAIM. However, we are open to answering any questions that applicants may have after they interview with us.
