Surgical Simulation
Surgical education is our top priority at the University of Cincinnati. While independent study is crucial for improving clinical knowledge and operative performance, we provide residents with a variety of structured educational activities. Interns participate in an 8-week “Intern Bootcamp” held by the Department of Surgery to learn basic and advanced technical skills. Intern Bootcamp also includes didactic sessions to familiarize interns with both common and emergent clinical scenarios. Interns and first year independent residents also participate in an in-person weekend “Plastic Surgery Bootcamp” held regionally by ACAPS. Interns are frequently reevaluated throughout their first year to make sure they advance their technical skills.
There are additional simulations - including cadaver based - throughout the residency for specific training purposes such as trauma, robotics, hernia, anatomy, vascular anastomosis, etc. The Division of Plastic Surgery has access to an animal-based microsurgery lab, as well as access to surgical microscopes in the Goodyear Lab and Plastic Surgery conference room.
